A painter of sunshine and the scintillating play of light, Pissarro produced many quiet rural landscapes. He layed a key role in the development of Impressionism (in fact he was the only artist to exhibit at all eight exhibitions). For him Impressionism was a movement which allowed artistic emancipation. Before he introduced figures into his work in 1880, giving them a more decorative character, his paintings resembled most those of Monet. |
