 Jean-Francois Millet (1814-1875 French)

Jean-Francois Millet was born the son of a poor peasant farmer in Normandy. Closer to the end of his life he began to use lighter colors and freer strokes, but still Millet showed fondness toward Impressionism. His works had a universal appeal and caught the eye of such artists as Van Gogh and Seurat. The social subject matter impressed them and he was greatly appreciated.
