 Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938 German)

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner considered himself the leader of Die Brucke (the Bridge), those German artists who rejected late impressionism to seek a more direct mode of expression. The German Expressionists were often stereotyped as tortured souls who transferred their angst directly to canvas. But they also realistically appraised themes of city life, and as this painting demonstrates, they celebrated nature in pastorals idealizing the primitive.
